Rum Runners Rum Cake Factory has been open since 2004 on
the south end of the Halifax waterfront, just up from George’s
Island. Here, the harbour mouth begins to open to the Atlantic
and Stevens particularly likes the view. You can see history
out there. You can see opportunity, too—and he has.
The Stevens family, you see, were seafarers of a distinctive
sort. During prohibition in the 1920s and 30s, Gordon Stevens’
great-grandfather was a rum runner from Cape Breton. How many
times did he sail in and out of Halifax harbour, loaded down
with contraband?
